Spitfire Cockpit
- Year
- 2020
In this personal project, I recreated the cockpit of a Supermarine Spitfire in 3D, from photo-based modeling to camera projection texturing, look development and compositing in Nuke
I started by gathering a wide range of photographic references of the cockpit, then chose one photo to serve as the main projection. From there, I modeled the whole cockpit in Maya, including the instrument panel and its gauges, the reflector gunsight, the control column with its spade grip, the throttle and the riveted frame around them
To texture it, I removed the lighting information from the reference photo in Photoshop, then projected it onto the model in Substance 3D Painter through a camera projection matching the original shot. I completed the rest of the texturing by hand, then handled look development, lighting and rendering, before finishing the image with compositing in Nuke
The project was a way to combine hard surface modeling and camera projection: the geometry had to be accurate enough for the projection to line up, while keeping every panel, rivet and label readable
